EYFS and Key Stage 1 Maths Essentials You’ll Cover in This Masterclass:

1. Creating Maths Everywhere!

  • The Classroom Environment: Why maths needs to be connected to all other areas of learning and not seen as separate. How to embed brilliant maths learning throughout your setting both indoors and out so ALL children WANT to learn maths!

  • The Emotional Environment:  How can we ensure children engage fully and can participate and learn both together and alone? Why talk contributes so much to learning. How playing physical games, exploring maths through nature and solving engaging problems significantly contribute to attainment and progress.

2. Brilliant Ideas for Teaching Counting and Early Number Skills:

  • Why there’s so much more to learning about number than counting and number recognition! What else can you be doing to help children make sense of maths and become expert early ‘problem-solvers’, ‘subitisers’ and ‘mental calculators’

  • What they are and why ‘subitising’ and ‘five/tens frames’ are such a game-changers and help children understand that numbers are made of other numbers (essential to calculation fluency)

  • How to teach early place value and ‘teen’ numbers in a completely new way which will simplify learning and reduce confusion

  • How to actively engage parents and families in supporting early number acquisition and positive attitudes about maths

  • Thank you for showing us HOW to change. So many courses just tell us what isn't working but not how to go about addressing this. Your approaches make so much sense!

  • Just to say thank you again for 3 really brilliant talks at SGIS. We're a small school near Basel and we’d be interested in anything you’re doing nearby (Zurich way) so please let us know!
